WHO WE ARE
Hanawalt & Son Lumber is a family‑run sawmill rooted in hard work, honest service, and generations of experience. What started as a small operation has grown into a trusted source for contractors, farmers, and builders across Iowa — but the heart of our work hasn’t changed. We still cut every board with care. We still show up when we say we will. And we still believe that good lumber and good people go hand in hand.
We keep things simple: quality cuts, straightforward pricing, and service you can count on. Whether you need hardwood, softwood, or custom dimensions, we deliver lumber the way it should be — consistent, dependable, and tailored to your project.

OUR STORY
The mill began as a small, family‑run operation — the kind built on grit, long days, and the kind of handshake trust that still means something in northeast Iowa. It was purchased from a grandfather who had little more than a saw, a patch of land, and a willingness to trade lumber for whatever folks brought in. Chickens, goods, supplies — if it kept the mill running, it was a fair trade.
Those early years were simple and tough. The mill grew board by board, season by season, through hard work and sacrifice. Family time was often traded for long hours in the yard. Weekends were spent working, improvements came slowly, and every step forward was earned the hard way.
As the mill evolved, the work did too — and it was learned the same way by both generations: through hands‑on experience. Stacking boards, running equipment, fixing what broke, and figuring things out together. Over time, that shared experience turned into real skill — sawing, grading, operating machinery, and handling every job the mill requires. The work wasn’t divided; it was shared. Two sets of hands learning the same lessons and putting in the same work to keep the mill moving forward.
Today, the mill is a true partnership — two generations working together, combining experience, energy, and a commitment to honest work. Nearly every job in the yard can be done by either set of hands, and the business continues to grow because both are equally invested in the work and the people they serve.
The mill is still home‑based, still rooted in the same patch of Iowa ground, and still powered by a crew that feels more like family than employees. People come here to work, but they stay because they’re part of something real — a place built on loyalty, community, and the belief that honest work speaks for itself.
This is our story.
This is our mill.
And this is the work we stand behind — together.
